The Goon Show on R4Ex today mentioned Gladys Young. Would that be
Gladys Smuckler Moskowitz? (And if so, why would someone with the
splendid moniker "Smuckler Moskowitz" change it to "Young"?)

A high and rising proportion of children are being born to mothers
least fitted to bring children into the world.... Some are of low
intelligence, most of low educational attainment. They are unlikely
to be able to give children the stable emotional background, the
consistent combination of love and firmness.... They are producing
problem children.... The balance of our human stock, is threatened...

No, it would be Gladys Young, the celebrated BBC Radio actress who won
three Silver Microphone awards. As far as I'm aware neither woman has/had
ever demonstrated any desire to change names for any reason.
