When I go to alt.binaries.sounds.radio.oldtime all I see is gobldy-goop.
What does one do with these files? Are they Bastard files?
a) Smuggle them into prisons in cakes as escape tools
b) Trim toe nails
c) Stand them in lines as single files

Please can someone enlighten a codger.

The preferred way is to get yourself a proper binary newsreader in place
of Outhouse Excess, which can dowload the files and reassemble them into
.mp3s that you can play on your computer or transfer to your mp3 player.
I prefer Xnews, but I'm sure other goonatics have their own favourites

I have a Mac and use MT-NewsWatcher, as a proper binary newsreader is
also a free binary newsreader. The amount of files you can download is
limited, but again, it's free.

I run "Unison" on my Mac and use the Unison server (10 bux Amurrican
per month) as my normal ISP canned Usenet about 4 months ago - seems to
work well tho !

I wish I could find a free news server that was reliable

I would certainly be surprised to find a news *server* that couldn't be

<bored> It would be halfway-good advice for the unlikely case that somebody
really did want to run all news servers on local machines. Unless there
really aren't any that only run on Macs, of course.

I'd expect that pretty much any client that will run on a unixish
box will run on a Mac. But look upwards for the statement I was querying.

There are very few non-subscription news servers which carry binaries.

Those that do are not worth the hassle - limited hierarchies (very few
carry alt.binaries), piss poor retention, lots of downtime, bad download
speeds and timeouts.

If you're looking for a decent /binaries/ news server, consider giganews
or astraweb.

However, the OP didn't mention binaries, so i'd recommend

http://www.eternal-september.org/

It requires registration but is free and certainly reliable enough for
recreational use.

I couldn't recommend aioe, it's reputation is somewhat tarnished

If articles posted on it are accepted in the places where you post,
then no. It just has a reputation as something of a troll-haven -
unavoidable when it doesn't require authentication to post, IMO.

At least aioe's reputation isn't quite as bad as that of the notorious
troll-haven and NSP of last resort, Altopia (alt.net). Practically
anything goes there, even path pre-loading. Just about the only
thing that will get you TOSsed from alt.net is outright forgery of
someone else's valid, working email address.

Don't panic. Add the mp3 extensions to the Durante files.
Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!
Manually and by hand. That's owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!
I prefer Xnews, but I'm sure other goonatics have their own favourites
yproxy is a possibility, if addicted to OE.
